Socioeconomic Portfolio of Tyumen Oblast

Tyumen Oblast (founded on 14 August, 1944) is one of the biggest regions of Russia. Its area is 1,464.2 thousand square kilometers (8.6% of the country’s area), its population is 3.4m people.
Tyumen Oblast is a compound subject of the Russian Federation. Its territory includes Khanty-Mansiysk Autonomous Okrug – Yugra and Yamal-Nenets Autonomous Okrug (founded on 10 December, 1930) which are independent subjects of the Russian Federation.

Tyumen Oblast (without its Autonomous Okrugs)

The territory of Tyumen Oblast (without its autonomous okrugs) ranks 24th position among all regions of the country (160.1 thousand square kilometers) and its population ranks 36th place (1,345.2 thousand people).
Oil is the most valuable mineral resource of Tyumen Oblast. Its deposits are concentrated in the north part of the territory, mainly in Uvat Rayon. By 1 January, 2010, 35 oil fields were prospected and registered in the state balance.
The territory is situated in the basin of the Irtysh. The most full-flowing rivers are The Tura, The Tobol, The Ishim, The Pyshma, The Iset, The Tavda. Prevalence of small rivers, great marshiness of reservoirs and lots of lakes are distinctive features of its hydrographic system.
The fishery potential of lakes is as rather high.
The agricultural lands (area of which is 3.4m hectars) are concentrated in the south of Oblast. The conditions for agricultural activity in the south of Tyumen Oblast are relatively favourable. The temperature regime allows farmers to grow a wide range of main agricultural crops including cereals. The large areas of hayfields and pasture-grounds stipulate dairy-and-animal husbandry which is the leading branch of agriculture.
Egg and meat branches of poultry farming are developed and also there are rabbit breeding and other farms.

Economy of the Oblast

Tyumen Oblast (without its autonomous okrugs) belongs to a number of economically developed regions of Russia. It has an advantageous geographical location and is a connecting link between eastern and western regions of the country, oil and gas north and the industrial Urals.
The economy of the region is diversified and rather harmonious. Industry, construction, transport and communications, agriculture, goods and service sector are the main branches in the structure of gross regional product.
Neighborhood to oil and gas territories of Khanty-Mansiysk and Yamal-Nenets Autonomous Okrugs has an effect on the Oblast’s economic development. Equipment and other technical means for oil and gas industry, building materials, food stuffs and other consumer goods are supplied to the North of the Oblast.
Industrial complex plays the key role in the economy of the Oblast. Organizations of the manufacturing industry (84.3% share in the total volume of shipped products), organizations of production and distribution of electric power, water and gas (8.4%), extraction of minerals (7.3%) take the leading position in the structure of the industry.
Oil extraction is a comparatively new branch in the industry structure of the Oblast. TNK-BP carries out infrastructural arrangement of the territory and development of Uvat Group’s fields.
Oil products manufacturing, machine-building, metal-working industry, as well as foodstuffs and building materials production have a significant share in the manufacturing industries.
Oil-processing has greatly developed lately. ZAO Antipino NPZ has big perspectives. Another technological works was put into operation in May, 2010. It increased the capacity of the factory in initial oil processing by 5 times (4m tonnes per year).

Tobolsk Petrochemical Plant (OOO Tobolsk-Neftekhim), the biggest one in the country processing light hydrocarbonic raw materials, is of great importance for the economy of both the Oblast and the country. The plant produces components for synthetic rubber manufacturing (butadiene and isobutylene), high-octane additive to motor fuel (metiltretbutyle ether, hydrocarbonic liquid gases).
Tobolsk Industrial Site is carrying out a project that stipulates construction of installations for producing propane dehydrated propylene and polypropylene with capacity of 500 thousand tonnes per year. The volume and investment amount of this project is the biggest in Russian petrochemistry for the last 20 years.
Machine-building plants are oriented towards manufacturing a wide range of products for the fuel-energy complex, construction and transport, execution of orders from northern okrugs organizations of Tyumen Oblast. Among mass types production of the machine-building complex there are accumulators, medical equipment and instruments, premises of container type, different sorts of oil and gas industry equipment.
Food industry of the Oblast is presented by a complex versatile group of plants producing dairy-meat products, bread, confectionery, flour, cereals, alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages, fish products. More than 600 organizations and workshops produce food-stuffs.
Dairy-meat factories, making a valuable contribution to the development of the food industry, occupy 2/3 in the production volume.
Plants of the construction industry produce a wide range of ferroconcrete items, materials for walls, heat-insulation materials (clayite, fibre glass items, and so on). There are modern lines producing paving blocks, border stone and other materials for municipal improvement.

In the last few years, new production lines have been created, a number of plants have been modernized, new modern technological units have been installed there, and assortment of produced items has been widened. Due to this fact, there are opportunities for significant increase in the volume of building materials for the construction field in the Oblast.
Furniture industry is developed very well since there are a lot of plants that manufacture a wide assortment of products.
The electric-power industry in the South of the Oblast is presented by three thermal electric power stations – Tyumen Heat Electropower Station-1, Tyumen Heat Electropower Station-2 and Tobolsk Heat Electropower Station which are subsidiaries of OAO Fortum. Overall fixed capacity of the stations is 1,679 megawatt of electric energy and 5,474 gigacallories per hour of thermal energy. This capacity ultimately meets all the needs of the consumers of the Oblast.
In Tyumen and Tobolsk, a number of new electric power stations that will apply steam-and-gas cycle technology are being constructed.

Cooperation agreement between the Tyumen region Government and Association of light industry enterprises

On Friday November 15, 2011 a cooperation agreement between the Tyumen region Government and Association of light industry enterprises was signed by the Deputy Governor Vladimir Mazur and the Association President Dmitry Petrovsky, reported the Department on investment policy and state support of entrepreneurship.
